Another great end of the year wrap-up, this time from After Ellen.
A few titles will be very familiar, like ROOM by Emma Donoghue, but some I am seeing for the first time, including IF YOU FOLLOW ME by Malena Watrous (Harper Perennial). And, has anyone read Eileen Myles’ INFERNO (O/R Books)? I’ve been seeing it everywhere, but anything called “a poet’s novel” frightens me not a little, despite that awesome jacket art and her accessible essay in the QUEER 13 collection we read a few months ago.
I really should catch-up on all of the 2010 books I have yet to read—and finish HIT BY A FARM….among others—but this list reminded of an author I have been meaning to read for a long time and more acutely since I ran into her in the Auckland airport this summer: Val McDermid. There are a lot of great books to chose from including A PLACE OF EXECUTION (St. Martin’s Minotaur) and BLOOD IN THE WIRE (St. Martin’s Minotaur), but I think I need a Scottish feminist lesbian detective in my life, especially one sleuthing in a girls’ boarding school, so the first Lindsay Gordon book it is: REPORT FOR MURDER (Bywater Books, 2005, originally published in 1998).
Happy holiday reading!
