Jumpstarting the World: Lammie Finalists

Everyone was a huge fan of Jumpstart the World by Catherine Ryan Hyde (Knopf for Young Readers) at book club on Monday—well-drawn characters, and a realistic, insightful portrayal of being 16 with a crush—so how great to see it among the Lammie finalists announced last week by the Lambda Literary Foundation.

Besides Jumpstart the World, I don’t think we’ve read any of these titles in book club so lots of possibilities to keep in mind. My goal: one book from each category (except gay erotica, gay romance, or poetry. I just….can’t) before the winners are announced at an awards ceremony in NYC on May 26. I’m on the host committee so you will be hearing more about it!

So far, I’ve got these categories covered:

LGBT Children’s/Young Adult and Transgender Fiction

Jumpstart the World, by Catherine Ryan Hyde (Knopf Books for Young Readers)

Bisexual Nonfiction

Sal Mineo, by Michael Gregg Michaud (Crown Archetype). This one has it all–fame, fortune, sex, talent, and tragedy. If you only think of James Dean (or Natalie Wood) in Rebel Without a Cause, think again!

Lesbian Fiction

Big Bang Symphony, by Lucy Jane Bledsoe (University of Wisconsin Press)

Gay Memoir

She Ain’t Heavy, She’s My Mother, by Bryan Batt (Harmony Books). A fabulous, hilarious way to get your Bryan Batt fix until They clue in and bring Sal back to Made Men.

And the rest of the finalists are…
